Staying in a nation with little to no knowledge of the local language poses to be one of the biggest social and practical challenges for many people. Sometimes, this becomes so severe that it leads to various difficulties. I strongly agree with this statement and this essay will discuss some reasons for the same.
To begin with, immigrants face problems understanding local customs when they do not know the native language of the country, they are living in. This also causes them to be socially backward. They do not quickly make friends or get acquainted and as a result, fail to get a grip of their surroundings. In addition, this difference provokes bias and racism which can lead to violent hate crimes against those who cannot speak the regional language. In turn, non-natives develop animosity towards others living in the same community and refuse to socialize.
Moreover, not knowing the language could potentially put one’s life in a hazardous situation while handling complicated machinery. For instance, when using an electrical or flammable device, not following the right directions could result in a dangerous outcome. This effects the workplace safety if operated as part of their job. Besides, it makes it difficult to carry normal conversations at many places including gas stations, restaurants, offices and when asking for help. Therefore, lack of proficiency in the local language, causes many unavoidable practical issues.
To conclude, I think that unable to understand regional language affects the well-being of people living a foreign land. Thus, it is important to learn the basics of the language spoken in a country before migrating there to avoid some brutal situations.
