  • What it was?

  • And explain how it influenced your life?

Having a goal is an important step to achieve success in life. I have had the opportunity of setting many goals in my life however ,today I would like to speak about a specific goal which I successfully attained and am proud of it.

I decided to apply for a Master’s degree in English from a reputed Open University, as doing so would ensure me better career prospects. I was working in a full time job . My work was demanding and initially when I began the course I managed to spend very little time on my studies. It was the time of my final year examination. Time was running out of my hands and I barely knew the curriculum. One fine day when there were barely two months for the exam, I made up my mind. I went to my room, reflected on my situation, wrote down my goal, and that was I would pass the exam with distinction at any cost. I made a schedule, sorted out the books according to the schedule and from that same day , I set off on my path towards my goal. I used to burn midnight oil on all days of the week. I cut myself off from social media and television. In the office, I used to grab my notes even during lunch breaks. My parents encouraged me in every step that I took and finally, on the day my results were announced, I almost fainted when I heard that I had scored a distinction.

It was the best day of my life and it was such a rewarding moment to realize that my diligence and commitment towards my goal had paid off. I realized that "nothing is impossible" if we have a strong desire to achieve it. It was this high score that led to my promotion as Head of the Department in the institution where I was working. This achievement paved the way for my success and I have been a ardent preacher of goal setting since then.

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. Do people need to write down targets or just memorize them?

In my perspective, writing down goals or targets is taking a huge step towards its realisation. Writing helps memory retention and understanding. People who don’t write down their goals are more likely to fail than those who do.

2. Do people in your country usually set goals?

A majority of the educated youngsters are tech savvy and because of the huge leap in technology that India has witnessed in the recent years this section of our masses are achievers in every field of life. Every new day, we see youth making strides in different fields and this can be attributed to goal setting, diligence and commitment to succeed.

3. Should parents set targets for children?

After a certain age, parents I strongly think should keep away from setting targets for their children. It can have disastrous consequences on the life of youth as parents doing so, try to fulfil their expectations and dreams through their children.

4. When do young men and women begin setting targets for themselves?

Men and women according to me begin goal setting at an early age. It’s in their middle school or usually after they finish their high school, modern day youth set their objectives and visions for life and with the help of their parents, works hard towards fulfilment of their dreams.

5. Do young people and old individuals have different sorts of goals? What are they?

Of course they are different. Younger people are more likely to feel motivated by goals, money and recognition from others, whereas older generation is more inspired by their family, leading a peaceful life and maybe travelling to different parts of the world.

6. What is more fulfilling working towards a goal or achieving it?

I strongly believe that both working towards a goal and its achievement are equally satisfying as each complements the other. When each step taken towards a dream brings one closer to the final realisation it turns out to be highly motivating and when the goal is realised, the feeling is incomparable.
