Describe a house or an apartment you would like to live in
  • What it is like?

  • Where it would be?

  • Why you would like to live in this house/apartment?

  • And how you feel about this house/apartment?

My family and I have only ever lived in rented houses. It is one of my goals to build a house for my parents with everything that we ever wanted. Everyone has their own plans to build a nice house for themselves. Likewise, I have made so many plans and notes to design how each room would look like, the kind of furniture it would have, and how I would adorn it.

My house would be a modern villa with a huge backyard where I can grow a nice garden with my favourite flower plants. Inside the house, there would be a capacious hall, a TV room with a built-in home theater and a kitchen with a wide dining area. Upstairs, there would be three bedrooms, one for my parents, one for me, and the other one for guests.

I love seaside locations and certainly would enjoy having my home there. I plan to build a house near the beach so I can go on walks along the shore and relish the nature. In addition, I would build balconies that oversee the beach side and have fresh air flow into the rooms. This is pretty much how I imagined my house would be and I would absolutely love to live there with my family.

Now, this would be my home only when I build it myself and gift it to my parents. They have lived in the suburbs for quite some time, and it would be a pleasant change for them. I am sure, it would be gratifying for me when I finally start living there. I have been planning on it for years now which makes me even more excited to kick-start my home building journey.

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. Do most people live in an apartment or house in your country?

It mostly depends on the preferences of a person and the location they want to live in. In India, if people are situated in the suburbs and countryside, they like to live in an independent house with family while in the cities, people mostly live in apartments which are desirable for young people who like to share living spaces with others.

2. Do young people in your country like to live with their parents or by themselves?

In my country, people tend to live together with their parents unless they move out of their hometown for higher education or for a job. It’s actually an integral part of the culture in India to share a home with parents. We have many joint families where three generations of people live in the same house.

3. Would you like to live in a foreign country in the future?

Absolutely, I always wanted to take my career forward by finding an overseas opportunity. I would definitely like to live in a foreign place for a few years to experience other cultures and gain better insights. I think it would be a great opportunity to explore and also, challenge myself to make a living elsewhere.

4. How is modern home design in your country different to that of the past?

In the past, people used bamboo and thatched roof models for building a house whereas in recent times, all buildings follow a modern structural design. They now make use of all the space available and build wide corridors and doors to get more sunlight and air. Furthermore, houses now are equipped with things like in-built fridges and washing machines, which was not the case in the past.

5. In your country, what type of home do most people live in?

In India, people live in a variety of houses like individual or group houses and apartments which are usually concrete structures. In some areas, people like living in houses made of wood such as bamboo wood. The type also depends on the location, as seaside houses need distinctive design like weatherproofing.
