Describe a person you follow on social media
  • Who is he/she?

  • How do you know him/her?

  • What does he/she post on social media?

  • And explain why you follow him/her on social media

There are many prominent personalities whom I follow on social media handles and I would like to talk about the first actor I started following who is Tom Cruise. He is a Hollywood actor who gained critical acclaim for his diverse movie choices and talent. I am a movie lover and regularly watch action-packed films. His movie franchise Mission Impossible is one of my favourite movie series and I have watched all the movie instalments released so far. Although the first Mission Impossible movie was released in 1996, I started watching them in 2006 as a kid when the third movie came out, and I have revered him ever since.

Ever since I was a child, I loved watching action thrillers and my father used to play Hollywood movies on DVDs every Saturday and that became a family routine. It was during one of those routines that I watched Mission Impossible, and I was amazed by how charming Tom was. I watched all his movies after that. I started looking him up online as I admired him and followed him on Instagram. He does not post a lot but lets his fans get a sneak peek of his upcoming movies and posts teasers of them.

I commend his acting skills along with the extreme stunts he does in every movie. Besides, he is a very fit person who has managed to look the same and perform physical stunts throughout the years. These activities coupled with his acting have made me his fan and I absolutely love following him on social media to get updates on his movies.

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. What can people do on social media?

People usually stay in touch with their friends and family. We can follow famous people and see how they are doing. Besides, there are many accounts on social media that teach cooking, singing etc, for everyone to learn or just for entertainment. Further, there are knowledge-sharing accounts with local and international happenings that people can follow to be updated with the latest information.

2. Do you think older people and younger people will use the same kind of social media software?

I believe there is a vast difference between the kinds of software that older people and younger people use. The young tend to use applications that provide a source of entertainment such as Instagram and Tiktok, while the older generation incline towards using Youtube and Whatsapp to keep in touch with their family and friends or just to make calls.

3. Do older people spend much time on social media?

Nowadays, more and more people from the older generations are starting to learn and use social media. They are on their phones for a significant amount of time, which was not the case, say, a decade ago. Their children and grandkids are usually away from them and the means to stay connected is social media, which explains why they use it.

4. Are non-social media like television and newspapers still useful?

While it is true that social media has in a way become a source for the latest news, television and newspapers still thrive because there are many people who prefer reading a newspaper or watching television. People who dislike using smartphones and those who do not have enough resources to use social media stick to conventional TV and newspapers, which are also believed to be more authentic.
