I am always interested in learning something new in order to enhance my skills. Besides educational skills, I have learned some practical skills that help me in my daily chores. One such skill I have acquired is driving. It is one of the most useful skills a person can have as it makes commute using a personal vehicle comfortable.

Last year, I learned how to drive from a renowned driving institute in my area. It is quite established in my city with an exemplifying experience of ten years in this field. The professionals there began the lessons by first teaching the basics and dos and don’ts of driving. Initially, I found it hard to understand the basic concepts of car driving as some topics such as gearing systems and how to reverse were a bit convoluted. However, personalised training helped me become familiar with the technicalities before I started driving on the road.

I started by driving in deserted areas where traffic is usually low. My trainer always sat in the passenger’s seat and guided me in every step. I was able to drive on the road at different speeds quickly but the trouble began when I had to park. It was the most challenging part of the lessons which took about two weeks for me to learn properly.

Finally, after a month of practicing daily, I was able to learn every aspect of driving a car. I passed the driving test and obtained my four-wheeler driving license a month later. It absolutely felt like an achievement for me. Now, I drive to work every day and often take my family out for long drives and vacations. I am glad I learned this skill as it is helping in my daily routine.

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. What is the most important practical skill in modern society?

In today’s world, almost everything involves the use of smartphones and computers. Even small local shops in towns and countryside have digital payments enabled and use computers for logging their sales and maintaining accounts. People order products online more and more which demands skill in operating phones and computers. So, in my view, digital and technological literacy is the most important skill.

2. What kinds of skills are difficult to learn?

I think difficulty is subjective. In my view, public speaking skills are the most difficult. It takes immense courage and confidence to be able to address a crowd of people while speaking with a steady tone. Besides, it demands a lot of practice to be a good public speaker.

3. What kinds of professions require practical skills?

I believe every profession requires practical skills. To be productive, multiple skills such as time management, communication and multi-tasking skills are required. No matter what kind of job a person has, they need to schedule things and use their time well to get things done before reaching deadlines.
