Describe a skill that you can teach other people
  • what is it?

  • how did you learn it?

  • how can you teach others this skill?

  • how do you feel about this skill?

I have managed to learn some important skills such as driving, cooking, dancing and public speaking over the years. These skills have helped me in my life in various occasions and I can teach people cooking in the most effective way. To be honest, I had never gone into the kitchen to make even an omelette for myself until after I graduated college. I was highly dependent on my mother for food and was never keen on learning how to cook. Anyway, after getting my first job, I moved out of my hometown to a different city where I started living alone. Local food seemed to be tasteless and unhealthy for me and I was left with no option but to cook. I started preparing food daily by taking tips from my mother and YouTube channels thereby developing an interest for it. Gradually, I became an amateur cook and made a variety of Indian and international dishes which received accolades from my friends several times.

I usually share pictures of the food that I make on social media platforms like Facebook where people can see them. On popular demand I started posting my recipes with pictures which people follow and later leave comments on how they turned out for them. I plan to start a channel on YouTube where I can post my detailed cooking videos to people who are willing to learn.

Although I was sceptical about my culinary skills initially, I feel great that I pulled through and eventually discovered my fervour for cooking. I think cooking is a life skill that everyone needs to learn as it is much needed to lead an independent life.

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. Should teachers be funny when they teach?

Sense of humour is a good characteristic to have that helps teachers connect better with their students. People like to engage with others who are funny and this trait encourages students to listen to their teachers. Although educational institutes are thought of being a serious setting, adding a bit of fun element while teaching certainly keeps students engaged.

2. What qualities should teachers have?

Teachers are the ones that help students hone their raw talent. The primary skill a teacher must possess is the ability to connect with students with good communication skills. In addition to this, they should be very knowledgeable of the subject they teach and should be able to engage their students and capture their attention in class.

3. Which do you think are more important practical skills or academic skills?

I believe practical skills are as important as academic skills and there is no debate on which one is needed more. They are co-dependent and to have seamless hands-on experience, one should have commendable academic skills. Sometimes, practical skills also add to our theoretical knowledge helping to enhance the overall skill level.

4. Which age group is the best age for learning?

I don’t think there is an age group that is best suited for learning. In my view, learning is for everyone at all times. With the rapidly developing technology, it’s now easy to have access to many learning materials and online knowledge platforms across the world that are available to anyone who has an active internet connection.
