Describe a skill that you learned from older people
  • What the skill is?

  • Who have you learned it from?

  • How have you learned it?

  • And how do you feel about it?

Growing up, my mother always used to cook for the entire family every day. We all loved her cooking and never really thought of learning it. When I was in college, during summer break I went to visit my grandmother who lives in a village. If I could call my mother a chef, then my grandmother would be the head chef. No matter what she makes, they always taste delectable

While I was there, my grandma told me stories about her childhood and how she learned to cook from her mother. She does everything by hand without even using electronic grinders. This was all fascinating to me and I asked her if she could tell me how to do it. She did better than that; she taught me cooking for the two months I stayed with her.

To be honest, I had never gone into the kitchen to make even an omelet for myself, and I was highly dependent on my mother for food. Anyway, my grandma managed to teach me how to make some basic curries and different kinds of rice. Furthermore, she gave me some valuable tips and quick to make recipes when I don’t have much time. I continued to practice at home after returning and when I moved out of my hometown after getting a job, this skill helped me survive.

Although I was skeptical about my culinary skills initially, I feel great that I pulled through and eventually discovered my fervour for cooking. I think cooking is a life skill that everyone needs to learn as it is much needed to lead an independent life.
