Describe a song or a piece of music you like
  • what the song or music is?

  • what kind of song or music is it?

  • where you first heard it?

  • and explain why you like it?

I am a music lover and I listen to songs for at least an hour daily. In fact, music is an escape from reality for me. I remember the lyrics of countless songs that I love, but there is one song that I adore the most, called ‘The Night We Met’ by Lord Huron. It is an Indie song made by a band that has a unique and diverse taste in music. The song carries a heart-warming rhythm which makes it indelible. I absolutely love listening to Indie songs that remind me of some fond yet heart-breaking memories.

I follow online videos that talk about lesser-known artists and their praiseworthy work. These videos introduce musicians who produce remarkable tunes with distinctive song writing abilities. I came across this song while watching one such video and have been in love with it ever since. Besides, I like sharing songs that are underrated yet enchanting, with my friends and this is one of the most shared songs by me.

This song is so endearing to me because it makes me reminisce about the times when love made me do extreme things. It talks about how a love had everything but eventually lost it all little by little given the circumstances that one goes through in the course of a relationship. It mirrors the harsh reality of losing a person that was meant to stay forever. I find solace in such songs as they remind me of the strength of affection I once had towards a person.

Vocabulary:

  2. Praiseworthy – deserving approval and admiration
  3. Endearing – inspiring affection
  4. Reminisce – indulge in enjoyable recollection of past events
  5. Solace – comfort

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. What types of songs are the most popular among today’s young generation in your country?

There are many flavors of Music available in India. If I’ll talk about the most famous genre. Then they are Instrumental, EDM/Rock, Carnatic Music, Classical and Bollywood Songs.

2. Why do you think pop music is so popular?

Pop music is so successful because the barrier for failure is so low, even if you are spectacularly successful you can still produce dreck that no-one will listen to even if you have had evolved your sound in a successful way in the past. Failure is constant, ever present and forces a speed of evolution, improvement and innovation that is almost unparalleled. Also, Pop music has very low barriers to entry, and with the advent of the internet, practically zero barriers to entry. This has increased the speed of mutation, the ease of failure and the potential of success.

3. What kinds of songs do elders prefer?

Most of the music that they know and seem to enjoy are songs that were current when they were in their late teens or early 20’s - in short the songs that played during the War, and the songs from the decades right after the War when they were coming home and getting back into having a normal life. So the songs that are most popular with these ‘elderly’ people are those from the 1940’s, 50’s and a little bit into the 60’s. The ‘big band era’ is a real hit with them.

4. Has your preference in music changed over the years?

My musical tastes have changed in that I am not as dismissive about music as I have been in the past. A number of bands and artists that I despised when I was younger have had me change my mind and see the merit in them. I’m still mostly dismissive of pop country and classical music, but top 40/pop music is no longer dismissed as readily as the other two. Basically, I can hear most genres of music and it works fine as background music. Another way my musical taste has changed is that I have a harder time listening to music that doesn’t move me in some way. I used to love listening to background music, but I just can’t do it anymore. I’ve heard music that was better than the music I wanted to create or hear, and settling for music that doesn’t move me just doesn’t work.
