Describe an ambition that you haven’t achieved
  • What it is

  • Why you haven’t achieved it

  • What you did

  • And how you felt about it

I am an ambitious person and I have many aspirations. I have always set goals and worked towards them right from when I was in school. The aim that I couldn’t achieve till now is to pursue higher education in Canada. Ever since I was in college studying for my bachelor’s degree, I dreamt of getting a post-graduation degree from a renowned university in Canada. I made plans with my best friend and decided to move there after completing my bachelor’s.

However, in the final year of my graduation, I cracked a job interview and got placed in a well-known multinational company. I struggled to decide between going for higher studies and getting practical experience by accepting the job offer. Later, I decided to go with the latter and joined the company to work there for a year and get professional experience, which would definitely be useful to me in my career.

I thought I would work only for a year or two and then start applying for universities, but some financial constraints stopped me from doing so. I am still working at the same company and trying to save as much as possible so I can move to Canada as a student to earn my degree.

Thankfully, I have enough to support myself after moving and I will start applying for universities this year as I don’t want to delay my plans any further. I felt disappointed when I wasn’t able to go when I initially planned, but now, I am happy that everything is finally falling into place. Sure, it did not go as planned till now and I expect there will be some more impediments in my way, but I am ready to take on them to achieve my dream.

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. What kinds of ambitions do people have?

I believe ambitions var with age of a person. In school, people just want to get good grades and get into a prestigious college. Later in life, we want to get a job or start a business and excel in our careers. Some aspire to build their own homes and some aim to become a public figure who can inspire others.

2. Why should parents encourage children to have ambitions?

Being ambitious provides direction and instills determination in children. These are much needed to shape a child’s future as they make them have a clear mindset and plan what they need to do so as to achieve their goals even if they fail initially.

3. Should parents interfere with their children’s ambitions?

Parents should provide guidance and advise their children of possible ways to achieve something, but they should always allow their children to set goals. It would create a negative impact on children if parents told them what to achieve or learn. It is important to give a child the freedom to think on their own and help them when they need it.

4. Is there any difference of the ambition of grown-ups and that of children?

Sometimes children have many imaginary goals like being able to fly someday after they grow up, while adults don’t have such aims as they are more mature and know that it’s not feasible. However, the major difference is that adults have aspirations that are aligned with their responsibilities, whereas children are concerned with school or college life.
