Describe an old person you know and respect
  • Who he or she is?

  • How you know this person?

  • What he or she is like?

  • And explain why you respect him or her?

There are many elder people in my life that I admire and have deep respect for. But the one person who is close to my heart and respect the most is my Grandfather. He is the strongest and most courteous person I have ever met. In my childhood, I was a bit scared of him at first as he had a straight face with a long moustache but eventually got along so well that I shared all my school secrets with him.

He is a humble person and a philanthropist who has helped numerous people in need throughout the years. He started volunteering to help at a local orphanage when he was young and ultimately started an NGO to support the poor by teaching them basic education and apprising them of various job opportunities. He never discriminates anyone and always has an open mind about things. I have to say, he is ahead of his generation as his thoughts align with modern thinking and lifestyle. Whenever I get a holiday, I visit him and spend time listening to his stories while telling him about mine.

He is a benevolent person with a pure heart who impels many including me. I wish to become a person like him and help people around me selflessly as much as I can. I sometimes wonder how he managed to be still so healthy and cheerful at the age of seventy. I think having an amicable nature helps stay strong for a long time. I feel happy to have him as my grandfather and wish to make him proud someday.

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. What qualities does a person need to have to take care of old people?

I believe people should have immense patience and kindness while looking after old people. People’s energy levels drop as they grow old and some need help even to walk a few steps, so someone who takes care of them should understand their needs and be respectful at the same time.

2. Do you think old people should be taken care of at home?

In my view, staying at home provides a better environment for old people. It gives them happiness to be around their children and grandkids. However, in case people work in offices for a long times, it is good to hire a caretaker for the old people. Either way, they would enjoy staying at home as it is a safe place for them which helps them feel good and healthy as well.

3. How can people in the neighbourhood help the elderly during an epidemic?

During an epidemic, the elderly is advised to stay at home to make sure they do not face any adversities. Neighbourhood people can talk to them regularly to assure them that everything is alright, and kids can come around to listen to their stories daily. We have observed the same during the recent Covid 19 pandemic and made sure the old were taken care of properly.

4. Do you see this kind of help occurring in your neighbourhood?

Yes, my neighbours are friendly and generous people. We come together during good and bad times to share each other’s joy and sadness respectively. I think friendly neighbours can make living a bit easier since we do not have nosy people around to poke around. They also help the old and kids with their daily routines by overseeing kids while they play and helping the elderly when needed.
