Describe something that was broken in your home and then repaired.
  • What it is

  • How it was broken

  • How you got it repaired

  • And how you felt about it

I have to say my household is not the most updated with latest technological appliances as we still use age-old electronic items which are on the brink of becoming faulty. There are numerous instances when something broke, and whenever I thought it couldn’t be repaired, it was always restored by some expert repairman.

Last year, our television stopped working after my brother hit it with a ball. I felt it was finally time to buy a brand-new smart TV but to my misery, my father asked me to take it to the service centre to get it checked and to see if there was a possibility to recondition it.

The next day, I did take it to the experts and got their advice. Apparently, it was just a damaged display, and it was salvageable. I needed to buy a new display which was a part of the equipment they were selling for repairs like these as well as bear the costs for manpower. Two days later, I visited the service centre again to pay off the bills and collect the TV. I have to say, it looked pretty decent, and we still use it.

Initially, I was happy that it stopped working, but considering it had stayed with us for so long working loyally over the years, I hoped it would be brought back to a good condition. It brings back fond memories of childhood as it was the smart TV of that time. Fortunately, it did, and although we bought a smart TV, we still use our old one.

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. Are IT-related jobs valued more by society?

I think IT jobs are just as important as other jobs and people do not give it additional importance and neither do they value them any less than other jobs. It is true that there has been a boom in the IT industry because of which many people have found jobs, but other industries also have significantly developed.

2. Is the quality of products worse than before?

It depends on the kind of products and their categories. For instance, technological devices have developed remarkably, which are now the most consumer-friendly products. On the other hand, things like kitchen appliances have taken a hit in quality as some of them are worn out just after using them for a brief time.

3. What kinds of things do people like to repair by themselves?

Thanks to video tutorials, people nowadays resort to restoring things by themselves. Recently, my brother solved an issue with his car on his own by watching a detailed video on YouTube. I have fixed some problems with my phone many times by just looking up solutions on the internet.

4. Why do people like to get their mobile phones repaired in specialised stores?

The main reason is when we buy a mobile phone, it comes with a free service for a period of one or two years. That way we don’t have to pay for the repairs. Secondly, stores that are run exclusively for particular brands of phones offer a guarantee that the same products would be used and that is considered an assurance to many.
